Should this happen to anyone of us and have the added misfortune of being sent to a tough prison, remember that the idea of taking a dump inside a cell with someone lying in a bunk about a foot away is the least of your problems. Survival, naturally, should be your biggest concern. Listed below are some prison no-nos that could earn you a shiv in the throat, and you should do everything to steer clear of these. Unless, of course, you have a death wish, or worse, you’re just plain stupid.

1. Staring at other inmates

We all know it’s not polite to stare. If law-abiding people outside the prison walls get offended by it, imagine how much more offended a hardened criminal serving time for a double murder could get.

2. Bragging about your crime

Some criminals are stupid enough to discuss what they’re in for to anyone who cares to listen. Maybe they want everyone to know they’re badasses or something, but it brings attention to themselves, and that is definitely not good when you’re in prison. And if the crime happens to be child-related, waking up with a sharp object in their gut is a foregone conclusion.

3. Gambling

When gambling, you either win or lose. When gambling in prison, losing or winning doesn’t matter. Either way, you make enemies. Winning could piss the losers off, and losing and not being able to afford to pay up is a sure way of shortening your stay in jail by getting killed. Always remember that when gambling in prison, it isn’t really money or cigarettes or stuff that you’re gambling with, so avoid it like the Ebola virus.

4. Pissing guards off

We’ve seen all those movies and TV shows where guards come down real hard on inmates who give them a difficult time. While these are fictional, they do make sense. Prison guards, after all, control every aspect of life inside the jail, and pissing them off isn’t exactly the wisest thing to do. Push guards’ buttons hard enough and they could easily have other lowlifes beat you to within an inch of your life.

5. Being too friendly with the guards

This is the other end of the spectrum, where being too friendly with the guards could raise suspicions that you could be telling on your fellow inmates. Any incident where a prisoner gets caught committing an infraction and you, being known as Mr. Congeniality among guards, will automatically be thought of as the rat. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out what could happen next.

6. Actually ratting your fellow prisoners out

7. Accepting favors from anyone

There’s no such thing as a freebie in prison. Anyone offers you something, say, a pack of cigarettes which you’re naïve enough to accept, expect to hand out two packs in exchange in the future. Whatever you do, never get indebted to anyone inside, for they are only all too willing to collect, or punish you for failing to return the favor.

8. Being an opinionated blabbermouth

Discuss politics, religion, music or any subject with any inmate and before you know it, you might just find yourself engaged in a violent argument that could only end with someone getting hurt or killed. Silence is indeed golden when in prison.

9. Using drugs

This may sound like something out of the “Say No To Drugs” campaign, but drugs really are bad news, outside or inside. Apart from getting punished if ever you get caught by the guards with some, you could end up dead should your drug debts accumulate and you fail to pay them.

10. Acting like an all-around jerk

People get killed for much less in the outside world. Tone down, or better yet, lose the attitude when you land in prison if you wanna outlive your sentence.

Crime does not pay. Some crimes, however, bring major paydays. Just ask the perpetrators of some of the biggest robberies of modern times.

Of course, looking over their shoulders for the rest of their lives and getting caught or killed sooner or later comprises the “does not pay” part. But for one day at least, the criminals responsible for such scores probably felt like they won the lottery with the staggering amounts they’ve cleaned out of the places listed below.

1. Central Bank of Iraq

Almost $1 billion was stolen from the Central Bank of Iraq in March 2003 upon orders of Saddam Hussein, just before the first U.S. bombs fell. A hand-written note signed by the dictator surfaced that month, ordering the “withdrawal” of $920 million from the bank and that the money be handed to his son Qusay. As far as bank heists go, this one has come down as the biggest bank heist ever.

2. Dar Es Salaam Bank, Iraq

Three guards who worked at the private Dar Es Salaam bank in Baghdad’s Karrada district stole about $300 million from the bank in July 2007.

3. Securitas Cash Management Ltd Depot, England

On February 2006, at least six men successfully carted away bank notes amounting to £53,116,760, or US$92.5 million at the time of the robbery, from a Securitas Cash Management Ltd depot in Vale Road, Tonbridge, Kent. This is considered as the largest cash robbery ever in British history.

4. Central Bank, Brazil

A gang of 10 to 20 robbers spent three months digging a tunnel from a house into the Central Bank in the city of Fortaleza, Brazil. Authorities believe the robbers successfully broke through between August 6 and August 8, 2005, and made off with 164.8 million Reals or US$71.6 million.

5. Northern Bank, Belfast, Northern Ireland

On December 20, 2004, a large group of robbers stole £26.5 million in pounds sterling, (roughly US$51.8 million today) from the Donegall Square headquarters of the Northern Bank in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The robbery caused considerable controversy, as it was publicly claimed that the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) was behind the raid, which, naturally was denied by the group.

6. Brink’s-Mat High Security Vault at Heathrow Airport, England

Six men broke into the Brink’s-Mat warehouse at Heathrow Airport on November 26, 1983 hoping to get their hands on £3 million in gold bars. Much to their elation, the high-security vault actually contained around 6,800 gold bars and 100,000 pounds of diamonds worth £26 million, all of which they promptly hauled off.

7. British Bank of The Middle East, Beirut, Lebanon

A group affiliated with the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) hit the Beirut branch of The British Bank of the Middle East in January 1976, and, with the help of imported Corsican safe-crackers, carted away £25 million from its vaults.

8. Dunbar Armored facility, Los Angeles, California

Some US$18.9 million were stolen from the Dunbar Armored facility in Los Angeles, California, on September 13, 1997 in what is considered the largest cash robbery ever in the United States.

Sure, some people go to the gym to ogle hot bodies working out. The rest of us, however, don’t come up with lame excuses to avoid exercise and actually go there to get in shape and keep our bodies healthy.

But then again, you can get sick at the gym. Gyms, after all, are a virtual hotbed of germs, bacteria and viruses, what with all the sweat from a myriad of strangers dripping all over the floor, the equipment, and in some cases, all over you, especially if the really sweaty woman working the treadmill beside yours has this habit of whipping her hair around to get it off her face.

But since we’re not all millionaires who can afford a gym of our own, and therefore have to share gym equipment with perfect strangers, the best that we can do is to be vigilant about our gym hygiene. Listed below are some tips:

1. Unless you’ve washed your hands, never touch your face after using gym equipment. The human hands are especially good at carrying germs, and you don’t want any of that coming into contact with all the openings on your face.

2. Wiping down dumbbells, barbells and exercise machines before and after you use it is not only good gym hygiene, but good gym etiquette as well.

3. It would be great if your gym provides alcohol-gel dispensers that kill germs on contact, but if doesn’t, bring your own and use it before touching equipment.

4. Exercise mats are generally drenched in sweat, so it would be wise to wash them down before using. But you can do one better and bring your own mat instead.

5. Unless you’re absolutely certain that your gym’s drinking fountain has been through an effective and safe sanitation process, bring your own bottled drinking water.

6. Don’t just throw or hang the towel that you’ve just wiped your sweat with on any spot inside the gym. Doing that means you either spread your own germs, or your towel would pick up other people’s germs.

7. If you don’t want rashes or boils popping up all over a most inconvenient spot in your anatomy, be sure to sit on your towel when using the sauna.

8. It is advisable to always shower after a workout to wash off the sweat and therefore feel clean and refreshed afterwards.

9. When using the shower, be sure to bring and your own wear flip-flops, since shower stalls, with all the people using them, harbor more germs than you can possibly imagine.

10. If showering after a heavy workout is not your thing, at least get out of those sweat-drenched clothes and change into something fresh before heading home. Some people drive home from the gym wearing their sweat-soaked gym clothes, and that is without a doubt very unsanitary.
