8 Female Celebrities Who Were Murdered
This may sound a bit sexist in today’s world of gender equality and all that, but there is just something about reading, watching or hearing news of women getting murdered that makes one feel a lot sicker to the stomach. This point was further driven home in my head by news of a deadly bank robbery in the Philippines last month, where robbers cold-bloodedly shot in the head one client and all nine employees of the bank, including two women, execution-style.
Less than a week later, pictures of the crime scene were leaked onto the Internet. While all the pics, which I would never show here, were equally gruesome, the sight of the two female employees, lying side-by-side while facedown in a pool of their blood and brains, with their pants clearly soiled, was what really made my heart sink.
This isn’t to say that a woman’s murder is a lot more tragic than that of a man’s, because a murder is a murder is a murder, and all murders are tragic. But for some strange, inexplicable reason, women getting murdered seems like a more enraging and ultimately depressing incident to many. It’s kinda hard to explain, but that’s probably how people felt when these female celebrities met their ultimate fate at the hands of a murderer. Most of them died before they were 30, and that makes their deaths all the more tragic.
Just when Selena, the “queen of Tejano music” was close to finding mainstream success in the United States, she was shot to death at the age of 23 by Yolanda Saldívar, the president of her own fan club.
2. Dominique Dunne
Best known for her role as the oldest daughter, Dana, in the 1982 film Poltergeist, she was strangled to death at her own home by her ex-boyfriend, Los Angeles chef John Thomas Sweeney, because she refused to reconcile with him.
3. Dorothy Stratten
She first made her mark as Playboy’s Playmate of the Year for 1980, then started an acting career that was moderately successful. But her life was cut short by a gunshot wound to the head, inflicted by ex-husband Paul Snider, who then turned the gun on himself and committed suicide.
4. Sharon Tate
Of all the celebrities in this list, Sharon Tate’s murder was the most gruesome. The actress, who was eight and a half months pregnant at the time of her death, was stabbed sixteen times on August 9, 1969 by followers of Charles Manson. Four other people were murdered by Manson’s people that same night.
5. Rebecca Schaeffer
Best known for her stint in the sitcom My Sister Sam, Schaeffer was shot in the chest in July 1989 by Robert John Bardo, who had been stalking the actress or several years. Schaeffer’s death prompted the passage of anti-stalking laws in California.
6. Adrienne Shelley
Her death on November 1, 2006 was initially thought of as a result of suicide, since her husband found her hanging by a bed sheet from a shower rod in the bathtub inside her Manhattan apartment. Eventually, a 19-year-old Ecuadorian illegal immigrant named Diego Pillco confessed to killing the actress, after she caught him stealing money from her purse and had threatened to call the police.
7. Tara Correa-McMullen
It is quite a coincidence that McMullen, best known for playing a gang member in the TV series Judging Amy, met her untimely demise in a gang-related incident in California where she was shot to death. She was 16 years old.
8. Lana Clarkson
A fashion model and actress known for her starring roles in a number of B-movies, Lana Clarkson was found dead with a single gunshot wound to her mouth inside the mansion of music producer Phil Spector. The music executive claimed it was an “accidental suicide”, but he was soon charged with Clarkson’s murder, and became the defendant in one of the most sensational celebrity crime cases of the new millennium. The jury, however, was unable to reach a verdict, prompting the judge to declare a mistrial. Spector will soon be retried in September this year.
